All,
Because of the nature of GW2's combat (positional awareness, dodging, painted targeting for AoE), I found it hard to use the default 1-0 number keys for firing off skills because of having to bring my fingers off of the movement keys to execute. In addition, there are the F1 - F4 keys for profession skills. F1 was especially awkward reaching up for while playing a melee warrior class and very distracting.
All that said, GW2 has a total of 11-14 skill keys depending on what profession you play. That's a lot. Granted 1-5 and F1 will be the most commonly used. That that said, every bwe I spent a lot of time playing around with remapping keys so that I could play more compfortably and am wondering what everyone else does for their controls?
I have a Razer Anansi keyboard and Deathadder mouse. The Anansi gives me 7 keys underneath the spacebar that I can use with my thumb. by default they are programmed as modifiers (shift, shift+alt, etc etc.) but I can program them to anything. So far I am only using them for things like inventory, map, hero panel, etc. The DeathAdder mouse has two easy press side buttons, M4 and M5.
My current control scheme is as follows: Q - Weapon Skill 1 (auto-attack chain) E - Healing Skill M4 - Wep Skill 2 M5 - Wep Skill 3 Shift+M4 - Wep SKill 4 Shift+M5 - Wep Skill 5 1-5 - Utilities + Elite
This works very well but is a bit complicated. Im gonig to try something new tonight and map M4 and M5 to Shift and Ctrl respectively and try the following:
Q - Weapon Skill 1 (auto-attack chain) E - Healing Skill 1-4 - Weapon skills 2-5 Shift+E - Elite Shift+1-4 - Utilities Ctril+1-4 - Profession Skills 1-4
Does your head hurt yet!? Complicated yeah? Am I just overcomplicating it or do some of you do some of the same things?
I know Morg has one of those SteelSeries gamepads he loves and uses the thumbstick for movement instead of WASD.
What say you all?

i've always been more comfortable using the right hand for mouse only movement (never really use the wasd keys) adn i use my left hand to target all my skill keys.
since i've never been one of those crazy pvp peeps that run around people like they are on crack, its worked well so far -
since i've not been able to play any of the beta's, we'll see how this works out for GW2

Interesting. Can you share how you map your mouse for movement? Left-Click Forward, Right-Click backwards or something like that? If so, how do you strafe left / right?

Just to report, this worked very well:
Q - Weapon Skill 1 (auto-attack chain) E - Healing Skill 1-4 - Weapon skills 2-5 Shift+E - Elite Shift+1-4 - Utilities Ctril+1-4 - Profession Skills 1-4
I mapped the two side-buttons on my mouse to Shift and Ctrl. This also worked very well for ground painted AoE skills.

i use a very hybrid set-up - so mouse for forward & looking - although based on the 6 minutes i get into the stress test tonight - i will use tap W for dodging (unless i find something different) I do use s for backwards - but i rarely move straight backwards as i play/ fight ...i'm more of a circle around girl. I i want to strafe...i do use a or d as a quick hit between skills - but I dont keep my left hard over the movement keys all the time - the left had is usually jumping back n forth between everything on the left side of the keyboard - its a quick stroke hit, not a sustained hold.

No crazy complex setup here, my brain couldn't handle it.
Wasd for move Mouse for strafe I have q for auto run and e to auto attack (skill 1)
As I don't pvp this works fine so far. As you said though logga the combat here is more twitch than most other mmos so I may have to re evaluate my setup

Here is how I have planned to map out my keys (haven't actually tried this in any of the BTWE's but it seems pretty sound in my head)
1-5 stay as default shift 1-4 are utility skills R,F,Shift R,Shift F - are the F1-F4 tool belt skills (for my engineer) M4 is my heal and pressing down on the mouse wheel (M3 i believe) is autorun
Think that is everything. I know this may not work for alot people, I have big hands (bout a 9" span) and have no issues pressing the '5' or even '6' key without moving my hands from wasd. Ohh yeah WASD are always my movement keys and i sometimes use Q and E to strafe

Making more and more sense to map healing to a different key. I'll likely stick with e for attack, q to heal and steal shobiz middle mouse button for auto run

i too use the right mouse to move/look...as for strafe/dodge i used the arrows on the right...since i have been using my G700 mouse for a while Im kindof hoping I will be able to map a few binds to it but if not I use the right side of my keyb (delete/end/PDown, etc...)

I broke down some time ago and bought a Logitech G-13 gamepad for my left hand. It took some getting use to but I absolutely love it. It has 20+ buttons that are easy to reach and once learned was very helpful. I have also tried a nostromo n52 game pad which was also quite nice but I prefer the G13. The same thing can be done with a keyboard but for me I never quite got the hang of it.
I have dodge and jump buttons assigned to extra buttons on the mouse, everything else on the gamepads. I use a combination of mouse and gamepad for movement.

My WMBP (Weapon of Mass Button Pressing) is a Logitech G13. That, combined with a Logitech G700 which has 7 extra buttons on it (well, 8 if I give up the button that triggers the battery status lights so I know how much juice I have left, but it isn't easy to press anyway) means I have oodles of buttons at my fingertips. Granted, some of my initial headstart play time will go towards setting up a profile for my G13 and G700. In hindsight, I probably should have done that during one of the BWEs. Just think, some of my precious head start time will be for nothing more than configuring a button profile! Well, actually, nix that. My WoW profiles will work just fine. I'll just have to change the keybindings in GW2 appropriately.

I'm using Logitech G700 mouse. 4 buttons on the thumb for switching attunements and scroll button for dodge.
Also using the G-13. Had the n52 for years so I'm still learning. I do like the joystick but I had to make a mod using some InstaMorph because my thumb kept slipping off.

I got large hands and it looks like I would have a tough time clicking the bottom 2 rows on the g13. Anyone have that problem?

I do like the joystick but I had to make a mod using some InstaMorph because my thumb kept slipping off. Since you've used both the n52 and the G13, can you tell me what you think of the G13. I still have a n52 but have been curious about the g13. It looks like it has more buttons and the joystick looks to be an improvement over the n52, but it is as good a quality, does the joystick actually work well? are all the buttons easy to get to and use or is it too many, and is it Comfortable(i love the shape and feel of the n52)?

So far I'm gonna have to go with the n52. I'm only using the bottom 2 rows so far. I've got decent size hands and i still can't hit all the keys comfortably.
It's built solid and joystick is better than the D pad. I'm sure after some time I'll get better with it.

I'll tell you what, the n52 was bought out by Razer and I got my hands on one at Bestbuy and those keys have an excellent keypress to them!

Ha, good stuff. I got so busy just playing the game I hadn't even considered adjusting the default controls- though I can see how that would be helpful. I've certainly noticed that activating most of my skills with the mouse is less than efficient. However, so far I have had decent success basically just button smashing, but I can see how that probably wouldn't fare too well in PvP and as PvE progresses. Need to take some time and actually use my fancy G700 mouse...
