There was a time when I fiddled around with Linux. It was actually fun and interesting getting the thing to actually work. I know it's gotten a lot better since then, but it still isn't quite there. For funsies, I tried to install Ubuntu just a few weeks ago. I couldn't get the installer to work, it would freeze up at the very first screen. I had to scour the internet to find out I had to use a certain boot switch to get the installer to use standard VGA output. My Nvidia cards wouldn't work properly until after the installer pulled down the proprietary Nvidia drivers, which weren't available during the actual OS installation.
When I buy a game I want to be able to just put in the disc (or download it as the case may be these days) and simply have it work. I don't want to have to worry about whether the video card drivers put out for Linux are worth a crap or of WINE is going to play nice or what command line options I need to get the thing to start without crashing or screwing up. There was a time when I found it fun to try to get things to work when they weren't quite supported. I guess I'm past that phase. I think Linux is still a long ways away from truly being able to compete against Windows as far as the average user is concerned.
That said, I really hate Windows 8's new Metro UI. I don't think it's entirely just because I'm not familiar with it yet. My brain realizes that I'm using a touch-input optimized UI when I don't actually have touch input available. Those two thoughts just clash in my head whenever I see Metro. I'm forced to ask myself why I would want big, huge tiles when I'm still using a mouse. Keyboard shortcuts seem extremely necessary on Windows 8 to get things done in a timely manner.
I'm normally an early adopter when it comes to a new version of Windows. I had Vista installed on my machine when it was still a Release Candidate and, despite what many people have to say about Vista, I personally didn't have any problems with it. In regards to Windows 8, though, I really don't think I'll be getting it right away at this point.

I know what you mean by the large tiles (ie a touch interface without touch input) but I have forced myself to use only windows 8 for a couple of weeks to see how frustrating it would be. And I can say that everything I want is really right there just in different places.
Windows 8 is really microsoft's attempt to beat apple/android in the race to merge mobile/tablet/pc and the console into one unified system.
We'll see how it all works out when everything (win8, phone8, surface and the xbox update) all drop this fall.

I thought about getting Windows 8 until I looked and seen it. I don't want my computer to look like/at like a tablet. If I wanted a tablet I would buy one. I think this new OS windows is putting out will be more hated then Windows XP. I have never hated any Windows OS. Never had any problems with any of them, starting back in Windows 3.1 days. But Windows is going in the wrong direction with 8.

seems like every other windows OS is a flop. Windows 98 good, ME sucked, XP good, Vista sucked, 7 good, 8
