Hello everyone. I had been scanning the Guild forums and stumbled across the General Gaming thread so I thought I would share, what I feel, is an exciting "up and comer". Like me, I am sure most of you are avid gamers and have a pretty nice game collection on your shelves (hopefully this is not in place of a 401K plan) . I primarily collect RPG games and have quite a few "old schoolers" such as Pool of Radiance, Bards Tale (Commodore 64).....Anyways, I scan the web from time to time to see what projects are in the works and about a month ago my search paid off.
Tentatively scheduled to be released in April is a game titled Project Eternity developed by Obsidian Entertainment. Obsidian was founded in 2003 by 5 veterans from Black Isle Studios. If any of you are old school RPG fans then you will know that the developers worked on such classics as Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale and Planescape: Torment. The link is here: or you can do a google search for Project Eternity Kickstarter.
(In case others might benefit from this I wanted to discuss Kickstarter as I really think it is a neat service) Not sure if any of you are familiar with a site called Kickstarter (awesome site, awesome concept), but in short it is a forum used by businesses/individuals to raise funds for their projects. You review the project and if you like it you pick a $ amount (or donate whatever) and submit. With Project Eternity you are given several $ packages to choose from each with a list of special "offerings" for your early donation. I have been following this project for a couple of months now (It ends in 4 days) and to give you an idea of how big this game is they set their goal at 1.1mil and they are now sitting at $2.8mil. This thing is crazy big! If you love RPG's then you owe it to yourself to visit the site and review the project and its offerings, but do so within the next 4 days or wait until the games release in April (assuming they hit the mark) and pay full price with no trimmings.
The sweet thing about Kickstarter (in the area of game development) is it provides a FANTASTIC way to eliminate all of the pressures often realized when a business accepts monies from an investment group. The developers bring an idea to the table, the pitch is presented, the monies are lent and then the pressure to release begins often leading to cuts in funding and material; which most often leads to game release failure. Since Project Eternity is going to be totally funded by individual game junkies they will be able to avoid all of the standard red tape that comes with selling your soul to a large investment group and focus those energies on the game itself!
Ever notice how often these game developers go out of business? A good example, I feel, would be Everquest. I am sure some of you remember when EQ first came out and then Sony took it over. It became all about the money. The love of RPG was lost the day Sony took it over. I remember logging into that game for the first time (1999). The magic I felt during that time is indescribable. Part of that was due to the fact that its concept was ground breaking, but a large part was due to the story itself. The lore was great. The play was HARD - especially if you preferred soloing. Man, those were the days. Well, Sony's crappy management of the EQ franchise changed Blizzard forever so I guess it benefited some. Man o man have things changed since the days of Zork and Diku Muds! At least I got quick at typing! Moving on......
On another note: I am excited about this guild and I am very excited about GW2. I was hesitant to buy it as I am tired of pi$$ing money away on a game that was supposed to be good. Well, I did my research and bought GW2 and I must say that I am very, very pleased. The story is nice, the play style presents a refreshing change......it's a great game that I feel will forever change MMORPG's going forward. I hope I will get to group with some of you in the future so that I can experience the game with friends because that is a big part of the experience is it not?
Here is to our future my friends!
