Whelp, I suppose there's no use in me being in these forums anymore. Bye guys!
Just kidding. I'm not sure if this is a good idea on WoW's part, actually. I can see what they are trying to do; make some people contemplating sticking around and playing WoW instead of moving over to the shiny new guild wars 2. However, I can see this plan easily backfiring. Players like me who might be excited by a new patch and possibly give the game another trial will now not even consider the new patch, as I will be too busy playing GW2 to care about it. By trying to hide GW2 in the shadow of their patch, they are hiding their patch in the shadow of GW2.
I'm not dissing Wow as a game or anything, I have actually enjoyed world of warcraft a lot in the past. It's just that this new patch is being released at a time when I'm going to be super excited about playing Guild Wars 2. Maybe if it were in a month or and Guild Wars 2 was losing its new-ness it might attract some players back, but releasing it right at the launch of its juggernaut competitor seems like a bad idea.
Anyways, only 10 more days until the headstart! I'm so excited for GW2! I am on the eve of the launch of my dream MMO <3

Is it so that it will keep people interested, or that it will keep their internet busy downloading the 6GB so that they can't play GW2?

Is it so that it will keep people interested, or that it will keep their internet busy downloading the 6GB so that they can't play GW2? Joke's on them, I'm checking regularly to download every GW2 patch. I'll get it the second the servers will let me in. Also there's the whole not planning on playing this WoW patch and all of that, so I have that going for me too. Blizzard has tried to thwart me again!

What a tacky move by blizzard haha! Ohh well I couldn't care less, unlike Danemeon, I _am_ dissing WoW as a game. Its terrible and I hope it dies lol. Any fun I had playing that game was because of the people I played with and it was just a medium I used to spend time with my friends. That's just what I think but I really like what this one guy said in the thread in the link Orion posted
that's the thing though, areanet has stated that WoW's target audience isn't who they want to entice, which is the other reason why GW2 isn't using the sub fee (aside from the fact that it's bullshit anyway.) all you need to do is just buy the game and you'll still have access to the servers, they're not trying to make you give up your subscription to WoW.
i quit right before lich king, having raided up to sunwell and went up to rank 13 pvp in vanilla. WoW's gear chase is nothing more than dangling a carrot on a stick for subscription holders to chase. content isn't skill based, it's gear based and crappy players with better gear will ALWAYS pwn skilled players that aren't geared. frankly, i stopped finding it fun once i graduated undergrad and had to work a 9-5.
now i'm in my last year of law school and it doesn't look like i'll be getting any more time to play either, so GW2's set up fits me nicely. yeah i play casually but i'm not a scrub and i hate a lot of player's assumptions that unless you throw in all this time into pointless time sinks you're not a skilled player. better gear != skilled player, which is why i like that GW2's PVP gives players equal gear. if you're skilled you'll win on an equal footing. do competitive fighting games let one player start with an advantage? does starcraft let one player start the match with 9 workers and the other with 5? can one team be allowed to double dribble in basketball?
sorry for the long rant haha. point is, if you REALLY like how WoW does things, GW2 isn't for you. if you want to try something different, as gamers it wouldn't hurt to give it a shot, zeus knows how much we spend on other games/consoles/rigs.

Bah, this is really a non issue if you ask me, some ppl will play both wow and gw2 at launch , if any of you are like I used to be you will have 3-4 subs for diff games at a time. I used to be an MMOholic. I started playing WOW a few months after launch (before they had WSG) and have played through to last fall. The game changed too much for my liking and is the reason I don't play it anymore, this doesn't change the fact that there are still many ppl who still enjoy wow. For me it was all down hill after the release of TBC...This is basically an attempt from Blizz to prevent loss of subs and it may actually work depending on when one's subscription period ends. many will renew their subs if it coincides with this patch, so Blizz will still get some coin from it.
Those like myself who just had enough wont care about this patch and will play whatever game they feel like and in this case will most likely be GW2. This is actually a smart move for Blizz, just bad timing

As someone who led, helped, and grew a guild in WOW it really pains me to see what they did to at one time a great MMO. I will say this I personally blame Blizzard for every single issue in wow. They have gone from wanting it to be a hardcore game, to one steeped in Lore, to then going very casual, to then hard again. The players each year do not know the game they are playing. An then you add the dated quest type, the loot based game play, and it simply is not casual friendly, and creates a atmosphere of me vs you (aka kill marketing and stealing). Plus as someone who still has guild mates I bleed and sweat and met for years with and a sister there it still is amazing...it really is. However it is the last of the subscription type, as Swtor proved (which I loved despite a few huge flaws and I confess I am a HUGE star wars fan) gamer's are becoming smarter. They are freely admitting they have other passions, jobs, family, and interests, and we have never gotten nor ever would get value for 15.00 a month to play ANY MMO. As someone who will ALWAYS love the MMO best I am hoping Arena Net allows the model to grow up, evolve, and let gamer's play what we want, when we want, how we want, and pay what we want. I can soundly confess 25% of my attraction to this before I saw it, got to know great guildie's, and knew my wife would be always helped and talked to was knowing I will never have to QUIT this game for being to pricey or expensive. An I want to see Free to play done right as Arena net did, and allow the MMO to evolve, grow, deepen, and be as varied as the gamer's who play them.
